This refers to the promotion of goods and/or services through the internet, via the emails and wireless media. Internet marketing is sometimes referred to as digital marketing or online marketing.  Also included in internet marketing is digital customer data and electronic customer relationship management. This type of marketing takes into account the technical aspects of the internet that include design, development, advertising and sales.

Various types of Internet Marketing:

Social Media marketing – This involves the use of various social media network s to market goods and services. This has gained popularity especially with increase in social media networks.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) – This is where the visibility of a product or service website or web page in search engines for example Google is improved or enhanced.  This enables those searching around the internet to view your website first thus giving you an edge over your competitors.  This usually is unpaid also called natural search results.

Pay per Click/Impression: This is where advertisements of products and services are done on pre-decided websites.
Business Models Associated with Internet Marketing:

E-Commerce: In this model, goods are sold directly to the consumers or businesses and/or from one consumer to another by the companies or organizations doing marketing and sales.

Affiliate Marketing:  This is a marketing practice where a business rewards one or more affiliates for each customer they bring because of their marketing efforts.  It is a revenue sharing venture between a website owner and an on-line merchant.

Lead-based websites: A company acquires value by getting sales from its websites.

Local internet marketing: This is a strategy that is employed by small sized organization in utilizing the internet to find and nurture relationships that can later lead into real-world advantages.

One-to-one approach: In this the marketers target a person who is using the internet and the information is specifically made for this individual. This method is usually used in search marketing.

Niche marketing: This method creates a particular destination for web users and consumers on specific goods and services. These marketers have a specialized knowledge on given goods and services only and not a general approach.

Geo- targeting: in this approach, the marketers’ device a way of determining the geolocation of a website visitor with geolocation software and thus deliver different information to different consumers depending on location.

For internet marketing to be successful, the following principles must be adhered to: connection, persistence, popularity, reputation, sympathy and scarcity.

Merits of Internet marketing:

a.    Cost: marketers are able to reach a large number of audiences as compared to traditional methods of marketing. This therefore enables companies to appeal greatly to consumers thus help to realize profits quickly. Its cheaper.

b.    Traceability. Internet marketing can be traced, measured, and tested through a server. This can be achieved by use of methods like pay per impression, pay per click and pay per action.

Demerits:

For goods especially, this method may not be admired by some consumers because they need to touch, try, and taste the products before buying them. This method does not allow for that therefore calling for great reassurances by the marketers to their customers that what they are selling is the best and is real.

Other demerits include: Information security, consumers fear that they may not receive the products they purchased.
